We can “see” by our eyes; we can “hear” by our ears; we can “smell” by our nose; we can “feel” by our skin. Sense organs receive many information everyday.

Electromagnetic weapons can directly stimulate our neurons to let us “see” “hear” “smell” or “feel” by our brain. Victims also feel that information is “transferring” to their brain.

Californian biologist Andrew Hessel says, 'Cells are living computers and DNA is a programming language,' but warns that this could lead to viruses and bacteria used to 'hack' human minds

The field of 'synthetic biology' is in its infancy. We can 'tweak' the genetics of life forms - but billionaire entrepreneur Craig Venter only created 'artificial life' for the first time last year, christening his life form 'Synthia'.

But experts working within the field believe that our expertise is out-accelerating natural evolution by a factor of millions of years - and some warn that synthetic biology could spin out of control.

It could lead, says Andrew Hessel of Singularity University, on Nasa's research campus, to a world where hackers could engineer viruses or bacteria to control human minds.

Hessel believes that genetic engineering is the next frontier of computing.

'This is one of the most powerful technologies in the world,' says Hessel 'Synthetic biology - the writing of life.'

'I advocate that cells are living computers and DNA is a programming language.'

'I want to see life programmed and used to solve global challenges so that humanity can achieve a sustainable relationship within the biosphere,' he says.It's growing fast. It will grow faster than computer technologies.'

He predicts a world where we can 'print' DNA, and even 'decode' it. But he warned, in a speech at technology conference TXM, that viruses and bacteria send chemicals into human brains - and could be used to influence, or even 'control' their host.

The challenge is to eat the fruit without the worm.'

Hessel, however, is generally optimistic about the future of synthetic biology.

The scientist - who had a vasectomy because he 'never trusted the process' of natural reproduction, says, 'We are going to make synthetic genomes - human genomes. It will make cloning look organic. It will make human reproduction look quaint.'

Ethics body seeks views on new wave of brain technologies

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics today launched a consultation on the ethics of new types of technologies and devices that ‘intervene’ in the brain, such as brain-computer interfaces, deep brain stimulation, and neural stem cell therapy.

These technologies are often being developed for use in the treatment of conditions including Parkinson’s disease, depression and stroke and it is thought they could bring significant medical benefits, especially for those who are severely affected by neurological disease or have a severe brain injury.

Outside of the health context, they could also be used in various military applications, for example to develop weapons or vehicles that are controlled remotely by brain signals. And there are commercial possibilities in the gaming industry, for example, the development of computer games that are controlled by people’s thoughts.

“Intervening in the brain has always raised both hopes and fears in equal measure” said Thomas Baldwin, Chair of the Council’s study and Professor of Philosophy at the University of York. “Hopes of curing terrible diseases, and fears about the consequences of trying to enhance human capability beyond what is normally possible. These challenge us to think carefully about fundamental questions to do with the brain: what makes us human, what makes us an individual, and how and why do we think and behave in the way we do.”

Clearly, some of these technologies have great potential. “Imagine a person who is disabled and cannot speak being able to move independently through a thought-controlled wheelchair or communicate via a computer voice”, said Professor Baldwin. On the other hand, concerns have been raised about safety of some of the techniques that are currently in development. “The impact on a person and on their mind has to be considered, for example, are there risks of unwanted changes in mood, behaviour or personality being introduced into the brain?”

There is also uncertainty over whether the techniques will be as effective in treating disease or aiding rehabilitation from brain injury as some claim they will be. Professor Baldwin said, “Many of these technologies are in the early stages of research, and patients who have high expectations of recovery or rehabilitation may sometimes be left disappointed and frustrated if the treatment doesn’t live up to expectations”.

The development of these technologies for use in warfare may be more troubling for some. “For example if brain-computer interfaces are used to control military aircraft or weapons from far away, who takes ultimate responsibility for the actions? Could this be blurring the line between man and machine?” said Professor Baldwin.

The Nuffield Council inquiry is focussing on technologies that intervene directly in the brain, often through the use of a device, or involving brain implants. The consultation runs until 23 April and the Council would like to hear the views of a wide range of people, including those who have used or are hoping to use these technologies, those involved in development or supply, researchers, academics, patients, medical professionals, regulators, policy makers and others. Responses to the consultation will be carefully considered, and a report setting out the Council’s findings is expected to be published in 2013.

BCI’s measure and analyse a person’s brain signals and converts it into an output such as movement. For example, a paralysed person could use a BCI to operate a wheelchair, or someone who has extreme difficulty speaking could use a BCI to communicate via a computer voice. These sorts of applications have been shown to be successful in a few reported cases, but the technology has not yet been developed for regular clinical use and there are questions over whether these technologies are reliable enough for use in everyday life.

Military applications, such as remote control of vehicles and machinery are not yet in wide use but are being researched and tested, and some commercial BCI developments are already on the market. Gamers can buy a wireless headset that aims to replace a joystick by controlling game play through brain signals.

The use of BCI’s will sometimes require surgery to implant electrodes into a person’s brain, although the most successful current developments are those that detect brain signals from the scalp, so they are less invasive.

Neurostimulation

Different regions of the brain are known to be linked to areas of perception, e.g. pain, sound, vision. Neurostimulation involves the application of an electric or magnetic stimulus to nerves to alter brain activity in a specific area.

The two best-known types are transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which is usually applied through a hand-held or chair-bound device and is non-invasive, and deep brain stimulation (DBS) which requires brain surgery to place an electrode in the brain and wires under the skin.

TMS is in clinical use and it is currently used mainly to treat depression, although research is underway on possible applications for conditions including obsessive compulsive disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, and pain disorders such as migraine. It has been shown to have some potential for improving memory and learning and research is underway on non-medical enhancement uses e.g. for education.

DBS is already used in treatment of Parkinson’s disease, obsessive-compulsive disorders and movement disorders such as dystonia (which causes tremors). Research is underway on possible benefits for patients with epilepsy, stroke, Tourette’s syndrome and severe pain. Possible complications of DBS are thought to include: stroke, confusion, speech disorders, visual problems and possible damage to the brain tissue surrounding the implant, infection, seizure, depression and the risks associated with general anaesthetic.

Neural stem cell therapy

Researchers are developing neural stem cells that could be used in treating conditions which involve the loss of nerve cells in the brain, for example Alzheimer’s disease, stroke or Huntingdon’s disease. The stem cells are injected into the brain under general anaesthetic.

In stroke, nerve cells can be lost in a particular brain region, leading to a reduced ability of the function associated with that region, e.g. moving the left hand side of the body. Neural stem cell therapy is thought be able to benefit people with these conditions and there is considerable interest and investment in this area of research, both privately and publicly. Small scale preliminary human trials are underway but the treatment is not yet routinely available in the UK.

Neural stem cell therapies are less well understood than other types of brain surgery and there are some concerns associated with its use – e.g. a risk of tumours forming and the possibility of unwanted changes being introduced into the brain – for example in mood, behaviour and ability.

John Luksetich, writer and co-director of “Shadow of the Monarch,” a major film now in pre-production by Go Nuts Films, admits that during the filming he is constantly “looking over his shoulder.” Monarch, he says, tackles the forbidden, foreboding subject of mind control, something which is being given more press during these days due to world turmoil. According to Luksetich, Adolph Hitler was one of the first dictators to investigate mind control and practiced it to an extent. “An elementary form of mind control is repeating a message time and time again until people believe it,” and this is what Hitler did. “However,” says Luksetich, “he also had scientists delving into more sophisticated forms of mind control, and there are many who believe investigation of this sort is being conducted today in several countries, including the US.”

He points to the growing abundance of transmission towers cropping up in all regions, seemingly for the benefit of wireless communications, such as cell phones. “Many believe that these towers are for the use of mind control techniques, since they far exceed the number necessary to communicate voice and data,” says Luksetich. “Ted Bundy, the 'Son of Sam' l killer David Berkowitz, Oswald, Timothy McVeigh, the Columbine shooters, Sirhan Sirhan, and even those connected with the 9/11 disaster” are thought to have been programmed. “I only hope that “Shadow of the Monarch” gets audiences to think about mind control. While space is thought to be the “final frontier,” the mind has many dimensions that have yet to be explored. And, just as space exploration is being conducted by several countries, so is investigation into the crevices of the mind,” concludes Luksetich.

If you are like the rest of us reading the above even though I told you not to think of the pink elephant; you did. Why did you? Well that has something to do with the way we interpret language in our minds. Advertisers have been using these techniques of linguistic programming to get people to think about their products. Bright imagery and key phrases that draw attention to a product are all ways that advertisers are controlling what we think, buy, and consume.

We are all susceptible to the powers of persuasion. But the power of manipulation by implanting a thought in the mind of a subject without them knowing is a concept that once you understand can help you get what you want and help you in your dealings with people. Though there are many different types of mind control methods out there and all of them have their place as techniques that have been tried and tested. The following list of methods is meant to help you know what those manipulations are so that you are aware when someone is trying to run a mind game on you.

Mind Contol Methods

Peer or Group Pressure
The need to belong to a certain group of people or to be accepted in a large group is a powerful way to lower someones defenses and resistance to participating in dangerous, harmful, or even criminal acts like those committed by gang members and in mobs.

Subliminal Messages
These are hidden messages placed into narratives or in instructions. The use of key words and phrases that have double meanings and speak to the subconscious mind cause the subject to react in favor of what the mind control user is programming the subject to do inwardly.

Confounding Doctrine
If a doctrine is so convoluted that the person learning it is forced to suspend logical thinking and comprehension as to accept what the doctrine says with blind willingness of its fantastical claims as truth and to not only believe the dogma but also share it with others.

Love Bombing or Cult Programming
The follower is supported by an overwhelming acceptance and expression of a common bond or spiritual family, flattery, caring, and love while the subject is active in the group. Those feelings are then withheld if the follower has questions that go against the group beliefs and often they are treated not as well until they can fall back in line and receive those feelings again.

Hypnosis or Hypnotic Suggestion
An induced guided trance state of altered consciousness where a person is in a state of heightened suggestibility and responds to instruction receptively. You can use trance hypnosis or rapid induction shock hypnosis to induce these states.

Us and Them
By using reinforcement of identity and a false sense of superiority over a group or groups different than those with similar morals, beliefs, political views, or racial stereotypes.Used in hate groups like Al Queda, the KKK, the Skinheads, and the Blackpanthars.

Isolation
By physically separating a person from their environment and familiar people they are likely to behave in a more acceptable manner.

Emotional Abuse
By systematically breaking down a person's ego and sense of self worth through putting them down, abusive language, and insinuated violence.

Sleep Deprivation
By creating an disorientating environment with bright lights and sounds as to cause a mental and physical break down through lack of rest and sleep.

Controlled Approval
By having control over a moral imperative of behavior through rewardments and punishments of desired and undesired behaviors.

Strict Rules and Removal or Privacy
Though it is a simple form of mind control just having rules causes a person to conform to the greater and perceived more powerful agencies standards or be punished for not following the rules through exclusion and loss of individualism. This is often done by taking someones privacy making them do their most private acts in view of the public.

Dress Codes
By having people wear a uniform it removes their individuality and transitions them into the group mentality.
