This study shows that the researchers used data from the Human Connectome Project to find a way of identifying individuals by their brain patterns. They could identify individuals "regardless of how the brain is engaged during imaging".

The Human Connectome Project is led by the universities of Washington, Minnesota, and Oxford:

I remember reading about brain fingerprinting years ago - some TIs thought it was for tracking people. I`m not sure what the information in the Nature article can be used for. I thought they could identify everyone by their EEG, so what would the internal brain scans add to that?

I found this Wikipedia article which says that brain fingerprinting was used in courts in the US in 2001 and India in 2010, but was ruled inadmissible. The description sounds more like mind reading, to try to find court standard evidence.

I`m now really confused about what brain fingerprinting is!
