Prof Peter D'Agostino was a prof of History at the Univ. of
Illinois in Chicago. He wrote a book called "Rome in America"..
two days before it was published he was murdered two doors down
from his house. He went to my church where I was an Usher-
Ascension Catholic Churh. He was a Catholic like I was once.. for
39 years.. until I read his book.

It sounds like you have a good handle on the situation. You're exactly
right about how manipulators work. They gain control over a person by
undermining their confidence and presenting themselves as the only
person that their victims can trust or be with. It's a very effective
technique, until the victim starts to get wise to it. Then the
manipulators resort to threats and violence to try to regain their
control over their victim. I'm glad you're now aware of what was
going on, as that will help you recover from the abuse and help you
avoid being victimized in that way again.

In a way, it might be a good thing that she cheated on you, because
that's what ultimately got you out of the situation. In time, you'll
be completely past the pain and anguish of all of this and you'll be
able to appreciate all of your great qualities. You'll be like a new
person.

You don't owe her any explanations for why you're not staying with her.
Nor do you need to take her phone calls at all.
It sounds like you're handling everything with exceptional grace and
diplomacy. You're not lowering your standards for behavior or being
baited into situations where she can make you feel bad. You should be
proud of yourself for that.

Things can only get better from here. You're on the right track. Let
us know if there's anything we can do.
