Patent Number 3,951,134 (April, 1976) represents an invention by Robert G. Malech. Here is its general description:


Apparatus for and method of sensing brain waves at a position remote from a subject whereby electromagnetic signals of different frequencies are simultaneously transmitted to the brain of the subject in which the signals interfere with one another to yield a waveform which is modulated by the subject's brain waves. The interference waveform which is representative of the brain wave activity is re-transmitted by the brain to a receiver where it is demodulated and amplified. The demodulated waveform is then displayed for visual viewing and routed to a computer for further processing and analysis. The demodulated waveform also can be used to produce a compensating signal which is transmitted back to the brain to effect a desired change in electrical activity therein.


This device can not only read brainwaves, but also alter them from a distance! Adding a computer trained to associate various sensory experiences with corresponding patterns of brainwave activity could produce a device capable of making people hear voices, smell odors, see images, feel sensations, and even experience emotions imposed by someone else.

I have a personal interest in this. From 1975 to 1988, I worked for the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. As of 1984, my workplace was Manhattan Borough Developmental Services Office (currently known as Metro New York Developmental Disabilities Services Office) at 75 Morton Street in New York's Greenwich Village.

One day, in the subway station, I ran into an old associate of mine, Darlton Haskins, previously a speech pathologist, but at that time working in an administrative position at the State's 111-8th Avenue office. Darlton told me that he was on his way to Long Island, where he was involved in a federally-funded project.

At my workplace in 1984-5, I heard frequent mention of a device called a "tape recorder" (judging by the context of the remarks, obviously not a common audio or video recorder). Director of Education and Training Rocco Menta (AKA "The Bald Eagle") referred to a device using "two different kinds of radiation."

Malech came from Long Island and his device does, indeed, use two different frequencies of radiation to create interference patterns modulated by the subject's cranial EM activity. Is the device with which monsters have tortured me since 1987 -- the weapon wielded by "Marlin Fitzwater's Private Purgatories"
-- based on Malech's patent?

Despite my erstwhile history as the world's most mediocre speech therapist, I am not enough of a "techie" to render an informed supposition. I can wonder, though. I can suspect, and I can invite others to wonder and suspect.
