Spies worry over "doomsday" cache stashed by ex-NSA contractor Snowden

REUTERS
By Mark Hosenball
WASHINGTON Mon Nov 25, 2013

(Reuters) - British and U.S. intelligence officials say they are worried about a "doomsday" cache of highly classified, heavily encrypted material they believe former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden has stored on a data cloud.

The cache contains documents generated by the NSA and other agencies and includes names of U.S. and allied intelligence personnel, seven current and former U.S. officials and other sources briefed on the matter said.

The data is protected with sophisticated encryption, and multiple passwords are needed to open it, said two of the sources, who like the others spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

The passwords are in the possession of at least three different people and are valid for only a brief time window each day, they said. The identities of persons who might have the passwords are unknown.

Spokespeople for both NSA and the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment.

One source described the cache of still unpublished material as Snowden's "insurance policy" against arrest or physical harm.

U.S. officials and other sources said only a small proportion of the classified material Snowden downloaded during stints as a contract systems administrator for NSA has been made public. Some Obama Administration officials have said privately that Snowden downloaded enough material to fuel two more years of news stories.

"The worst is yet to come," said one former U.S. official who follows the investigation closely.

Snowden, who is believed to have downloaded between 50,000 and 200,000 classified NSA and British government documents, is living in Russia under temporary asylum, where he fled after traveling to Hong Kong. He has been charged in the United States under the Espionage Act.

Cryptome, a website which started publishing leaked secret documents years before the group WikiLeaks or Snowden surfaced, estimated that the total number of Snowden documents made public so far is over 500.

Given Snowden's presence in Moscow, and the low likelihood that he will return to the United States anytime soon, U.S. and British authorities say they are focused more on dealing with the consequences of the material he has released than trying to apprehend him.

It is unclear whether U.S. or allied intelligence agencies - or those of adversary services such as Russia's and China's - know where the material is stored and, if so, have tried to unlock it.

One former senior U.S. official said that the Chinese and Russians have cryptographers skilled enough to open the cache if they find it.

Snowden's revelations of government secrets have brought to light extensive and previously unknown surveillance of phone, email and social media communications by the NSA and allied agencies. That has sparked several diplomatic rows between Washington and its allies, along with civil liberties debates in Europe, the United States and elsewhere.

Among the material which Snowden acquired from classified government computer servers, but which has not been published by media outlets known to have had access to it, are documents containing names and resumes of employees working for NSA's British counterpart, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), sources familiar with the matter said.

The sources said Snowden started downloading some of it from a classified GCHQ website, known as GC-Wiki, when he was employed by Dell and assigned to NSA in 2012.

Snowden made a calculated decision to move from Dell Inc to another NSA contractor, Booz Allen Hamilton, because he would have wide-ranging access to NSA data at the latter firm, one source with knowledge of the matter said.

"EXTREME PRECAUTIONS"

Glenn Greenwald, who met with Snowden in Hong Kong and was among the first to report on the leaked documents for the Guardian newspaper, said the former NSA contractor had "taken extreme precautions to make sure many different people around the world have these archives to insure the stories will inevitably be published."

"If anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he has arranged for them to get access to the full archives," Greenwald said in a June interview with the Daily Beast website. He added: "I don't know for sure whether has more documents than the ones he has given me... I believe he does."

In an email exchange with Reuters, Greenwald, who has said he remains in contact with Snowden, affirmed his statements about Snowden's "precautions" but said he had nothing to add.

Officials believe that the "doomsday" cache is stored and encrypted separately from any material that Snowden has provided to media outlets.

Conservative British politicians, including Louise Mensch, a former member of parliament, have accused the Guardian, one of two media outlets to first publish stories based on Snowden's leaks, of "trafficking of GCHQ agents' names abroad."

No names of British intelligence personnel have been published by any media outlet. After U.K. officials informed the Guardian it could face legal action, the newspaper disclosed it had destroyed computers containing Snowden material on GCHQ, but had provided copies of the data to the New York Times and the U.S. nonprofit group ProPublica.

Sources familiar with unpublished material Snowden downloaded said it also contains information about U.S. spy agencies such as the National Reconnaissance Office and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which operate U.S. image-producing satellites and analyze their data.

U.S. security officials have indicated in briefings they do not know what, if any, of the material is still in Snowden's personal possession. Snowden himself has been quoted as saying he took no such materials with him to Russia.

Hi everyone, could you please all fill this survey?

This is the second time i repost this (Sue kindly advised me to post it here so it doesnt get lost)

I live in Switzerland and i need as many testimonies as possible and as fast possible - Various press organs in Switzerland will read everything you write and this could have an impact. Especially with the Magnus Olsson incident which they have just been informed about.

1. How long have you been targeted and how did it start?

2.What are your symptoms?

3.If you experience v2k what do you hear and how often?

4.If you experience v2k what stories have you been led to believe about yourself and the identity of the voices?

5.If you receive artificial dreams while sleeping - What are the dreams about and what impact have they had?

6.Do your fear for your life or the ones of your family/beloved? Why?

7.If you could say something directly to the press, what would you tell them?

8.Is there anything else you wish to express about Magnus Olsson/Sean Stinn or yourself?

Thank you very much in advance for your cooperation.

Do you have an online diary?

I intend to show parts of the TI's stories, including mine, to other people and to the press in order to show the parallels and the beyond similar patterns between all stories, mostly explaining what the voices say and what the targeted individuals go through and how we see our lives helplessly destroyed while keeping a semblant of sanity.

So, do you have a website with your story you wish to share?

Sunday’s Washington Post Magazine published a cover story I’d been working on for the past number of months about an extremely large group of people who believe the government is targeting them as part of a “mind control” campaign.

I wrote a brief item at Defense Tech, over the weekend, and Noah suggested that I check back in a few days and post an update with the response to the article. Well, let’s just say life is an adventure, and the article has elicited strong reactions. What response?

Well, first there are the 70 or so blog entries related to the story, the online discussion and the nine full pages of comments appended to the Washington Post Magazine article, most from people who say they are victims of mind control. There are also some notable reactions at Defense Tech; and my e-mail inbox (by the way folks, Gmail was wrong about “never deleting another e-mail” — my account has hit its limit). Reactions came at two extremes: There were a number of “TIs” (short for Targeted Individuals) who graciously thanked me for writing their story, and then there were skeptics who attacked the article for not concluding the TIs are all schizophrenics in need of medical help.

My favorite comment from the Post’s site was simply: “Good grief, Sharon, what have you done?!”

I’ve often asked myself that same question.

There were a few people, however, who seemed to agree that whether the TIs’ claims are true or false, there’s something to be said about trying to understand why so many people believe the things they believe.

But for anyone who thinks that all TIs are mentally ill people in need of forced medication, I suggest you check out some of the extremely sane tactics they employ. For example, their organized response to the article would make some political campaigns jealous. As one mind control blog advises:

"We must write the Washington Post in high numbers to show that this story merits a follow up. We must get our side of the story out, before the perps start inundating them with letters that we are crazy. Please take part in this to give the accurate side of what is really happening and remember to forward any supporting evidence."

There’s also a few researchers raising a fascinating question in the medical literature:

One of the defining features of a delusion is that it should not be a belief “ordinarily accepted by other members of the person’s culture or subculture”. Nevertheless, some researchers have noted that there is no clear measure of what is ‘ordinarily accepted’. It is also possible that cultures or subcultures could be based around beliefs that would otherwise be diagnosed as delusional. Until now, however, there have been no obvious examples of such subcultures identified. In the Psychopathology paper, ten websites reporting psychosis-like ‘mind control’ experiences were identified. The reports were anonymised and independently blind-rated by three psychiatrists who confirmed that they reflect experiences stemming from psychosis.

One final thought: Some of the documents I dug up through a Freedom of Information Act request indeed confirmed that the Air Force Research Laboratory patented a device to send sounds and voices into someone’s head as a “psychological warfare tool.”

So, I guess that begs the obvious question: even if you dismiss everyone who claims they are a victim of mind-invading technology, what do you think the Pentagon plans to do with such a device?

Perp dreams - Are you going through the same thing too?

Some posts i recently read took my attention as, since i have been targeted, i had the most horrendous dreams almost every nights, especially last year: The perp made me dream about having sex with my whole family, sometimes 2 members at the same time, sometimes members of my family were filming it and the perp gave me the feeling that i was liking it. I also suspect that the perp made the same thing to some of my family members so that it would happen in real life (no kidding) - it was really ackward to see the looks of them waking up with the disorientation upon their face, i have shared it too - the one that says " was it a dream?" as some dreams were also attempted to be transformed and then forced as a memory into our minds while sleeping in order for the process to fully take place.

This is sick, utterly sick, and obviously, one of these psychopaths suffers from an unresolved Oedipus conflict projected on many of us as i have read.

Have you also had some for these most depraved dreams too? Do you have them often? Is it connected to anything you do?

I usually have them when my perp is angry, or mainly jealous at some of my social interactions, especialy if they are "successful" since success is a frustrated perp no-go..

Thank you for your answers.

The Voice of God Weapon Returns

 By Sharon Weinberger (Washington Post)

12.21.07

The Voice of God weapon — a device that projects voices into your head to make you think God is speaking to you — is the military’s equivalent of an urban myth.  Meaning, it’s mentioned periodically at defense workshops (ironically, I first heard about it at the same defense conference where I first met Noah), and typically someone whispers about it actually being used. Now Steven Corman, writing at the COMOPS journal, describes his own encounter with this urban myth:

At a government workshop some time ago I head someone describe a new tool that was described as the “voice of Allah.” This was said to be a device that would operate at a distance and would deliver a message that only a single person could hear. The story was that it was tested in a conflict situation in Iraq and pointed at one insurgent in a group, who whipped around looking in all directions, and began a heated conversation with his compatriots, who did not hear the message. At the time I greeted this story with some skepticism.

Is there any basis to this technology? Well, Holosonic Research Labs and American Technology Corporation both have versions of directed sound, which can allow a single person to hear a message that others around don’t hear. DARPA appears to be working on its own sonic projector. Intriguingly, Strategy Page reports that troops are using the Long Range Acoustic Device as a modified Voice of God weapon:

It appears that some of the troops in Iraq are using "spoken" (as opposed to "screeching") LRAD to mess with enemy fighters. Islamic terrorists tend to be superstitious and, of course, very religious. LRAD can put the "word of God" into their heads. If God, in the form of a voice that only you can hear, tells you to surrender, or run away, what are you gonna do?

And as Corman also notes, CNET recently wrote about an advertisement in New York for A&E’s TV show Paranormal State, which uses some of this technology. Beyond directed sound, it’s long been known that microwaves at certain frequencies can produce an auditory effect that sounds like it’s coming from within someone’s head (and there’s the nagging question of classified microwave work at Brooks Air Force Base, that the Air Force stubbornly refuses to talk about).

That brings us back to the Voice of God/Allah Weapon. Is it real or bogus? In one version — related to me by another defense reporter — it’s not just Allah’s voice — but an entire holographic image projected above (um, who decides what Allah looks like?).

Does it exist? I’m not sure, but it’s funny that when you hear it brought up at defense conferences, no one ever asks the obvious question: does anybody think this thing will actually convince people God is speaking to them? I’m thinking, not.

Dear fellow TI's, please copy and send this letter to Glenn Greenwald (glenn.greenwald@guardiannews.com) so that he knows that we exist. The more Mr Greenwald receives and the more chances we have to be heard if the Edward Snowden leaks are able to prove the mind and memory reading via satellite eavesdropping. We shall talk about the rest in due times. So, let us say numerous "Hello Mr Greenwald" from the peacepink community. ;)

Dear Mister Greenwald,

There hopefully will be many of us sending you the following email, all of which will start exactly like this one but containing different individual details at the end of it.

You may have heard of us in the past in different news articles such as the Washington Post or a mention in the History Channel. The mainstream news also mentioned people doing unexplainable acts in unexplainable situations, like Aaron Alexis or Miriam Carey. These people were wrongly labelled as crazy. Russell Tice, the first NSA whistleblower to mention very specific NSA Special Access Programs was also labelled as crazy by the NSA before he could speak about them publicly or to the Congress, and instead, he spoke about eavesdropping and described some of the dark work done at the NSA via alternative medias. We have had none of those opportunities and we do not expect them to arise any sooner.

However, we believe that the voice of many sounding like one has a chance to be listened to.

You are a journalist and a human right advocator Mr Greenwald.

We are Targeted Individuals by the NSA.

This is the reason why we chose to write to you while you are publishing these NSA leaks. We believe that there is a chance that you find some extremely complex datas in these leaks, and if interpreted correctly, will show solid evidence of these Special Access Programs and their capabilities of listening to, recording and digitizing the unthinkable via satellites: thoughts and memory.

We do not believe that you will find evidences of the suffering that many of us are enduring since years already which is why we shall leave this topic aside for now. We simply do not expect you to believe us. None does. All we ask you to, is to listen to us and take us in your consideration and mostly, look for these datas you may have already seen and was perhaps unable to decipher or stood puzzled about what they could mean facing a discovery as impossible as this.

Being able to prove with tangible evidences and publish that an ultra classified technology is able to achieve such prodigy and disrespect towards humanity to such depths will be our first step towards freedom. Freedom has been taken away from us the very second these SAP's were legally used upon civilians in all impunity and we want our freedom back. This freedom might lie in these very datas Edward Snowden chose to give to you.

Good luck Mr Greenwald and mostly, our deepest gratitude for your precious times.

Sincerely Yours, the peacepink community. (peacepink.ning.com)

9143125088?profile=original9143125489?profile=originalA lavish Star Trek room he had built as part of his 'Information Dominance Center' is endlessly revealing

Glenn Greenwald
theguardian.com, Sunday 15 September 2013

It has been previously reported that the mentality of NSA chief Gen. Keith Alexander is captured by his motto "Collect it All". It's a get-everything approach he pioneered first when aimed at an enemy population in the middle of a war zone in Iraq, one he has now imported onto US soil, aimed at the domestic population and everyone else.
But a perhaps even more disturbing and revealing vignette into the spy chief's mind comes from a new Foreign Policy article describing what the journal calls his "all-out, barely-legal drive to build the ultimate spy machine".

The personality driving all of this - not just Alexander's but much of Washington's - is perhaps best captured by this one passage, highlighted by PBS' News Hour in a post entitled: "NSA director modeled war room after Star Trek's Enterprise". The room was christened as part of the "Information Dominance Center"

"When he was running the Army's Intelligence and Security Command, Alexander brought many of his future allies down to Fort Belvoir for a tour of his base of operations, a facility known as the Information Dominance Center. It had been designed by a Hollywood set designer to mimic the bridge of the starship Enterprise from Star Trek, complete with chrome panels, computer stations, a huge TV monitor on the forward wall, and doors that made a 'whoosh' sound when they slid open and closed. Lawmakers and other important officials took turns sitting in a leather 'captain's chair' in the center of the room and watched as Alexander, a lover of science-fiction movies, showed off his data tools on the big screen.

"'Everybody wanted to sit in the chair at least once to pretend he was Jean-Luc Picard,' says a retired officer in charge of VIP visits."
But now, on the website of DBI Architects, Inc. of Washington and Reston, Virginia, there are what purports to be photographs of the actual Star-Trek-like headquarters commissioned by Gen. Alexander that so impressed his Congressional overseers. It's a 10,740 square foot labyrinth in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The brochure touts how "the prominently positioned chair provides the commanding officer an uninterrupted field of vision to a 22'-0" wide projection screen"

The glossy display further describes how "this project involved the renovation of standard office space into a highly classified, ultramodern operations center." Its "primary function is to enable 24-hour worldwide
visualization, planning, and execution of coordinated information operations for the US Army and other federal agencies." It gushes: "The futuristic, yet distinctly military, setting is further reinforced by the Commander's console, which gives the illusion that one has boarded a star ship"

Rest in peace Miriam Carey.

Washington (CNN) -- Authorities searching the home of a Connecticut woman who rammed barricades and led police on a chase near the U.S. Capitol found discharge papers from a 2012 mental health evaluation that listed prescriptions to treat schizophrenia and other mental disorders, a law enforcement source briefed on the investigation said Friday.
The woman, identified by law enforcement sources as Miriam Carey, 34, died after police shot her.

Earlier, sources said investigators found medications, but that proved later not to be accurate.

Carey's boyfriend told police in December that she appeared to be delusional, believing that President Barack Obama had placed Stamford, Connecticut, where they lived, under lockdown and that her home was under electronic surveillance, a law enforcement source involved in the investigation said.

Police say Carey rammed barricades and police cruisers -- actions Washington police Chief Cathy Lanier said appeared deliberate -- and sped down Pennsylvania Avenue before crashing. Two law enforcement officers were injured, and officers shot her to end the incident.

The Carey family is questioning whether shooting her was the only way to end the chase.

"We want to know if protocols were followed," family attorney Eric Sanders said on CNN's AC360.

Carey apparently did not have a weapon, but did have a 1-year-old girl in the car with her. The child -- Carey's daughter -- survived the chaos unharmed, officials said.

The child has been taken into protective custody by the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency. She has been temporarily placed with a foster family, according an agency spokesperson.

Why a new mom might put herself -- and her child -- in harm's way

Authorities who searched Carey's apartment in Stamford found discharge papers that listed risperidone, a medication to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, a law enforcement source said. They also found paperwork listing escitalopram, an antidepressant commonly prescribed under the brand name Lexapro, according to the source.

It was not known if she was taking any of the medications, and authorities have not officially linked the incident to mental illness or any other factor.

"There wasn't a pattern. It was something that occurred suddenly," Carey-Jones said. "She seemed overwhelmed. There was a lot of stress.

"There was not moments of her walking around with delusions. That was not what was going on."
